Chapter 45: Who am I? Where am I?
The night was deep, and everything was silent.
And it wasn’t the first or second time, either. For years now, he had been intermittently jolted awake like this from deep sleep.
Qiao Nan sat frozen in bed, clutching his forehead in utter confusion—
Then, out of nowhere, the revelation Mu Xiangxiang had told him not long ago surfaced in his mind.
“Fuck!” He violently threw off the blanket, jumped barefoot out of bed, and rushed for the door at top speed. He yanked it open and looked outside.
The second-floor hallway of the Qiao house, leading to the various bedrooms, lay silent and asleep. The place was so quiet he could practically hear a pin drop. There wasn’t a single suspicious person in sight besides himself.
Exactly the same as every previous time he’d tried to investigate. Everything looked perfectly normal—so normal there wasn’t the slightest clue to be found. In the past, Qiao Nan probably would’ve cursed a few times and written it off as some hallucination of his own. But now, combined with the truth Mu Xiangxiang had uncovered, the part of his brain responsible for memory suddenly started firing frantically.
He hadn’t experienced this kind of pain-awakening often. At the very least, it had never happened during periods when his family wasn’t home. But whenever his father and older brother occasionally came back to stay, and he happened to argue with them during that time, there was a high probability that he would wake up like this that same night.
It didn’t happen every single time, but two conditions were always necessary.
- Both his father and older brother had to be home. It wouldn’t happen if only one of them was around, or if Luo Meisheng was there with either of them.
- There had to be an argument. Usually one with his older brother…
Before, he had always assumed it was just stress-induced nightmares from getting too angry during fights. He’d even considered going to a major hospital to see a psychiatrist. But now that he thought about it— Who the hell wakes up from a dream still feeling actual physical pain from the attack?!
Right now the patch of scalp at his temple hurt so badly it felt like he was about to go bald!
At the far end of the empty hallway, that bedroom door remained quietly, naturally, utterly innocently closed—just like most bedroom doors in the city at this hour. As though it had never once been opened.
Qiao Nan gripped his doorknob tightly. Recalling that face—usually calm to the point of seeming almost asexual—his lips twitched violently.
“What the hell is wrong with him?!”
*****
After Mu Xiangxiang’s father went out at noon, she took a nap, then spent the entire night doing practice problems.
It had been too long since she’d gone to Yingcheng, and psychologically she still felt pressured. So after reviewing all the homework Qiao Nan had completed during this period, she finally snapped out of it and realized dawn was already breaking. Outside her room, she could hear the clatter of pots and pans.
She got up to stretch, then pressed herself against the door and listened for a moment. She could hear her parents speaking in lowered voices, discussing today’s business plans.
It sounded important. Someone had managed to secure a booth for Father Mu at a food expo in a culinary plaza. The exhibition seemed large-scale and influential. The couple had decided to go all out this time and had prepared a huge amount of ingredients. Mother Mu kept reminding Father Mu not to overexert himself when things got busy.
Mu Xiangxiang listened for a while before finally opening the door. The instant the gap appeared, the rich aroma from outside drifted in.
She hesitated for a few seconds before stepping out. The sky was not yet fully bright. The common area of the Mu household was bathed in warm lighting. Both her parents stood in the kitchen.
Father Mu was frying something in a pan. The sizzling sound of food hitting hot oil was irresistibly appetizing. Wearing a gray apron, he moved busily from one thing to another in total chaos, while Mother Mu didn’t help at all—she simply stood nearby with her hands behind her back, observing.
Their voices grew louder—
“Did you hear me?!” Mother Mu called.
“Yeah, yeah, I know already. You still don’t trust your husband?” Father Mu replied. “Come, come, taste this glutinous rice cake and see how it turned out—”
Mother Mu tucked her hair back with both hands and bit down on the spatula he offered her. “Hot!”
Father Mu blew on the pancake still on the spatula, scooped some into a small bowl, then thought for a moment before limping over to the chopstick holder to fetch her a pair of chopsticks. Only after handing everything to his wife did he continue bustling around.
Mother Mu casually dragged over a stool nearby and began eating leisurely while he worked.
Even though she had seen a similar scene before dinner yesterday, Mu Xiangxiang still couldn’t quite process it.
Her father still moved with traces of physical difficulty. The damage from that accident was irreversible. Back at home, even her most rebellious younger brother had always known not to let him move around and do chores whenever possible. And yet now, her healthy mother had somehow become the one being cared for.
The scene felt unfamiliar to her. It was completely different from the division of responsibilities she had always known in their household.
But strangely enough, it also felt familiar. Some vague memory seemed to tell her that many, many years ago, this exact picture had once unfolded before her younger self.
She stood there in the doorway staring blankly for so long that Mother Mu, who was eating breakfast, finally noticed her. Mother Mu quickly stood up and checked the watch on her wrist. “Xiangxiang, why are you up so early today?!”
Mu Xiangxiang snapped back to herself, noticing the new watch on her mother’s wrist at the same time, and relaxed slightly. “Reviewing. Memorizing vocabulary.”
Mother Mu looked pained. She walked over and took her daughter’s wrist. “Honestly, you and your brother… when are you two ever going to balance each other out so I can stop worrying?”
The dim ceiling lights shone over her. Only after Mother Mu drew close did Mu Xiangxiang truly get a good look at her—and she froze in amazement.
Mother Mu was still chewing as she noticed the expression on her daughter’s face. Immediately, a shy smile spread across her features. After swallowing, she tucked the curled hair at her temple behind her ear. “Well? Your dad and I are going to the expo today, so I just dressed up a little. Does it look alright?”
For several seconds, Mu Xiangxiang almost couldn’t speak. “Alright” didn’t even begin to cover it.
Her mother wore a silver-gray long-sleeved wool dress. The elegant tailoring of the mid-length skirt perfectly accentuated her graceful figure. Her curled hair had been blown fluffy and voluminous like clouds. And on the face of a woman who usually didn’t even bother with skincare products, there was actually light makeup.
Mu Xiangxiang knew her mother had been beautiful when she was young—from old photographs and the occasional nostalgic comments from neighbors and relatives. But in her memory, she had almost never seen her mother looking this radiant. Ever since she was old enough to understand things, her mother had always seemed worn down with exhaustion. She carried countless burdens for this fragile family, working endlessly like a machine.
The slender young woman in the black-and-white photos—smiling brightly in work clothes—had always felt unreal to her. Mu Xiangxiang could hardly connect those sparkling, innocent eyes to the weary face her mother wore after coming home from work.
And yet now, she suddenly felt as though she were dreaming through time itself.
The carefree innocence radiating from the woman before her—the kind that came from being deeply cherished and protected, utterly mismatched with her actual age—made her resemble the young girl from the old black-and-white photographs more and more, until the two images completely overlapped. Perfectly.
Meanwhile, Father Mu kept busy in the kitchen while taking the opportunity to complain: “Don’t listen to your mom talking nonsense. She says she ‘just dressed up a little,’ but after you went back to your room last night she ran off to dye her hair until after ten. And I can’t even tell what changed. Then she refused to sleep and got up at one in the morning putting on face masks and smearing all sorts of stuff on her face… Seriously, help me talk to her. Don’t let her tire herself out like this again.”
“What do you mean ‘stuff’? I’m old now, so I’m not allowed to want to look pretty anymore?” Mother Mu shot him an annoyed glare.
“What does age have to do with it? Who said you’re old?” Father Mu looked baffled. “I just don’t want you exhausting yourself! You’re already beautiful enough, there’s no need to go through all this trouble. I told you to sleep this morning and you wouldn’t listen. You’re a grown woman already and still this stubborn!”
Mother Mu’s irritation instantly melted into coquettish annoyance. “You’re so annoying! Go fry your pancakes!”
Father Mu laughed as he flipped the pan. “Then are you eating or not?”
Naturally, Mother Mu began placing orders. “No meat. I want sweet ones.”
Father Mu immediately rolled up his sleeves and limped over to the refrigerator to look for red bean paste. After pulling Mu Xiangxiang to the table, Mother Mu followed after him. Under the warm lights, the couple bustled close together, their backs somehow radiating an indescribable sweetness.
Mu Xiangxiang sat there blankly watching them. When her father struggled to brace a hand against his knee and squat down to rummage through the fridge, she almost reflexively stood up, wanting to stop him from working like she always used to and do it herself instead. But the owner of that stooped back suddenly turned his head, revealing a face glowing with excitement. “Xiangxiang, your dad steamed this red bean paste himself the other day. It’s delicious. Want me to make one for you too?”
Steamed it himself?
A fresh sweetness seemed to bloom in her mouth. The offer to help was already on the tip of her tongue, but when she met those eyes—filled with confidence in the flavor of the “red bean paste he’d made himself”—she somehow couldn’t say it.
The refrigerator in front of Father Mu was astonishingly huge. It was exactly the appliance those burly movers had delivered yesterday morning. From the brand to the size, everything about it screamed money.
Mu Xiangxiang found it difficult to connect something that looked like it belonged in the Qiao household with her own family’s finances. Yet Father Mu seemed entirely unconcerned. Yesterday, when Mother Mu had fretted over the price, he had comforted her instead: “Yeah, it’s a little expensive, but it’s big! The bigger it is, the more stuff it can hold. In summer we won’t have to worry about ingredients spoiling, either. Isn’t that good for business? Money’s meant to be earned—you can’t keep relying on saving every penny. If you save too much, you lose all quality of life.”
Really…What a bold thing to say.
And honestly, he really carried the air of the head of the household now.
So in the end she simply sat back down quietly and gave a soft “Mm.”
Father Mu looked delighted. He lifted out a heavy glass jar and stood up. Mother Mu watched eagerly, admiring her husband while continuing to boast to her daughter: “Your father’s red bean paste skills are legendary. Back when he still worked at the factory, every time he steamed red bean buns, the workers would line up outside the cafeteria first thing in the morning…”
Under his wife’s praise, Father Mu chuckled bashfully. His movements became even more energetic, almost as though someone had wound him up. In no time he finished the pancakes, even plating them nicely before setting one in front of his daughter. “Try it.”
The soft glutinous rice skin was kneaded with fragrant lard, the outer surface pan-fried to a golden crisp. The moment she bit down—Crunch. The tender, chewy wrapper burst apart together with the sweet red bean filling.
The bean paste was so smooth there wasn’t the slightest graininess left, yet its layered richness remained intact. Just as her mother said, it truly was a masterful skill.
Father Mu braced both hands on the table, looking every bit like a chef wearing a golden crown. His eyes sparkled. “How is it?”
Mu Xiangxiang looked up and met her father’s shining, confident gaze. Suddenly, her throat tightened. Her lips trembled. As though she were starving, she hurriedly took another bite before lowering her head, chewing as she spoke in a muffled voice: “…It’s delicious. Dad, you’re amazing.”
Father Mu froze for a moment as he looked at the top of her head, strange emotions swelling in his chest.
Truthfully, lately he had felt that something about his daughter was off. Sometimes she even gave him a strange sense of dissonance.
It wasn’t just the sudden haircut. His daughter was his daughter—she could shave herself bald and he still wouldn’t mistake his precious girl for someone else. And she was still as thoughtful and considerate as ever. Buying things for him, talking more than before, even occasionally going jogging despite always hating exercise. All positive changes. Yet for some reason, Father Mu still felt vaguely unsettled.
He didn’t know where that feeling came from. But sometimes, when the family sat around the dinner table in perfect harmony, a hollow emptiness would suddenly open inside him, bottomless and unreachable.
As though he had lost something precious. Yet he couldn’t remember what it was. Like standing in the middle of a crowded street clutching an empty pocket, mind completely blank, with no idea where to begin searching.
And at this moment, that feeling suddenly vanished.
Father Mu felt a little confused. He reached out and gently smoothed back the short hair that had fallen across his daughter’s forehead as she lowered her head, then laughed inwardly at himself.
Must’ve just been his imagination. His daughter had clearly been here the whole time. She hadn’t gone anywhere.
Yet somehow, right now, he felt indescribably happy.
As though all the praise she’d lavished on his cooking these past few days—slurping soup, eating noodles, gnawing on braised meats—couldn’t compare to this simple, understated compliment spoken with her head lowered.
His memories suddenly drifted back many years. Back when his daughter had been tiny, barely taller than the family stools.
Father Mu used to bring her to work to show her off. While he worked, he’d ask idle coworkers to play with her.
But she was clingy and refused to go to anyone else. The little bean-sized girl would rather sit quietly on a tiny stool, watching her father bustle around. Whenever Father Mu had a free moment, he’d turn back and hand her a snack. The neatly seated little girl would tilt her head up, her large black eyes filled with worship, and say: “Daddy, how are you so amazing?!”
Every time that happened, it felt as though someone had overturned an uncapped jar of honey inside his chest. Sweetness would slowly spill out, making him feel like Popeye after eating spinach—strong enough to pluck the stars from the sky for his daughter.
And now, smiling faintly, he once again found that familiar trembling sensation. Watching his daughter’s much more refined table manners compared to a few days ago, he couldn’t help reaching out to rub her fluffy-haired head—a head much bigger now than it had been all those years ago. “I’m your dad,” he said softly. “Of course I have to be amazing.”
*****
Half an hour later, the busy couple finally had to leave for work.
Father Mu reluctantly headed out after leaving several glutinous rice pancakes behind, reminding his daughter repeatedly to eat her fill since her appetite had grown lately. After the door closed, Mu Xiangxiang stood dazed in the new home that still carried lingering traces of the breakfast aroma. In the end, unable to resist, she ate another pancake.
This was already the fourth one…
Mu Xiangxiang felt utterly horrified. What was going on? With her old appetite, a pancake this size should have filled her up completely after just one.
She had always been skinny growing up, so she’d never cared much about her figure. But she was still a girl, and now she nervously went to weigh herself.
The number flashing on the electronic scale— 92 jin. She stared blankly. She vaguely remembered that during the physical exam last semester she’d only weighed 84 jin. And her height had barely changed since middle school.
She’d gained eight jin just like that?!
Never mind whether it looked bad or not. What Mu Xiangxiang really worried about was that all her clothes were size S. If she got too fat to fit into them, she’d have to spend money buying new ones.
With that in mind, she paid extra attention while changing clothes. Yet she discovered her figure hadn’t really changed at all. Her loose pants still fit loosely. The only difference was that her once-stick-thin arms now had a slight curve near the shoulders.
She pressed it experimentally. Firm. And not ugly-looking, either. So she dismissed it without thinking further.
Just as she picked up her books to memorize vocabulary, Qiao Nan called.
The phone that had belonged to Qiao Nan until recently vibrated on the table. On the screen, the huge single character “Mu”—a contact name he apparently hadn’t gotten around to changing yet—jumped insistently. That single-character nickname somehow carried a strange intimacy to it, making Mu Xiangxiang’s ears instantly heat up.
Qiao Nan’s voice came through mixed with the sound of wind. “Hey? You up yet?”
“…Mm.” Remembering what had happened yesterday, Mu Xiangxiang scratched lightly at the book on the table with her fingers, her voice slowing. “…What is it?”
“I’m almost at your place,” Qiao Nan said between breaths. “Your parents already left, right? Hurry downstairs.”
Mu Xiangxiang let out a startled “Huh?” She had just been about to say she still needed to memorize vocabulary when Qiao Nan suddenly asked in utter despair: “Tell me honestly—have you not exercised at all for me these past few days?”
Mu Xiangxiang: “……”
Mu Xiangxiang: “Cough.”
Mu Xiangxiang immediately began rummaging through things. “Wait for me a second.”
Then, while Qiao Nan continued trying to interrogate her from the other end, she decisively hung up.
After ending the call, she stood there at a complete loss, reviewing how she’d spent the past several days. Only to guiltily realize that she really had forgotten all about her promise to exercise on Qiao Nan’s behalf.
Ever since starting school again, Mu Xiangxiang had been attending classes, doing homework, keeping up with coursework from two different schools, carefully navigating relationships with Qiao Nan's family and friends, and every now and then Father Qiao and older brother would even take her to the company. All things considered, her twenty-four hours were always packed tight. Every minute had to be stretched as far as it would go. She simply had neither the time nor the energy to spare a thought for the word exercise, which had previously been almost nonexistent in her dictionary.
But none of that was an excuse...
A promise broken was still a promise broken. What was worse was that Qiao Nan had actually found out.
Mu Xiangxiang felt a little guilty... and a little annoyed. And mixed in with the annoyance was an unexpected hint of nervousness. Her gaze unconsciously drifted toward the loose loungewear lying on the bed after she'd changed out of it.
She'd gone downstairs yesterday wearing exactly that baggy outfit and a pair of slippers...
Looking at herself in the mirror, she saw a thick cream-colored sweatshirt paired with skinny jeans. After staring for a while, she decisively opened the wardrobe. Only to discover that it was filled with similar clothes. The outfits Qiao Nan had bought later were even more androgynous.
The only skirt she owned...was Yingcheng High's girls' uniform.
Silently, she reached for it. Well... I'm going to school today anyway.
Qiao Nan was squatting downstairs with an irritable expression. He really felt like he'd been cursed lately. Not only had some lunatic ruined his sleep yesterday… But this morning, when he'd gone out for his usual run, he'd been gasping for breath before even reaching six kilometers.
With his body, fifteen-kilometer runs used to be effortless!
While running, he lifted his shirt and looked at the abdominal muscles that were noticeably less defined than before. He got even angrier. So angry that he spent the rest of the run desperately overtaking bicycles.
There were quite a few elderly residents doing morning exercises downstairs in the Mu family neighborhood. Meeting the curious looks they gave him—as though he were a stranger—Qiao Nan felt an oddly satisfying sense of hidden superiority. These mortals would never guess...that the handsome guy squatting in front of them right now is the same "girl" who shocked everyone by cranking out pull-ups in the exercise area a few days ago.
And now… That handsome guy had come to settle accounts because his abs had disappeared.
The apartment building's security door beeped. Feeling slightly nervous, Mu Xiangxiang pushed it open. Immediately, she saw Qiao Nan, who had been squatting beside a pillar, look up at her. Sure enough… He wore the expression of someone here to demand an explanation.
The next instant, those sharp eyes slid downward. His gaze seemed almost warm. Mu Xiangxiang had the strange illusion that a line of fire was brushing down the skin of her legs. She hesitated before taking another step. Then she saw Qiao Nan stand up. He coughed. "...Are you stupid? It's freezing out. Why are you wearing a skirt?"
She paused. Looking around at what everyone else in the neighborhood was wearing, embarrassment finally dawned on her. "...I'll go change."
She turned to head back inside. Before she could close the door, Qiao Nan suddenly shouted, "Come back!"
Startled, she looked up. He glared at her. His sharp gaze swept down her body again before quickly looking away and landing on her hands. "...I said come back. What's all that you're carrying?"
Mu Xiangxiang hesitated before slowly walking over. "...Your wallet. Your car keys. And a few other things. Yesterday... um..."
The moment she mentioned yesterday, her ears turned red. "...Yesterday I was in such a hurry going downstairs that I forgot to take them out and return them."
Looking down at her, Qiao Nan fixed his gaze on her slightly flushed face. When he accepted the items and stuffed them into his pocket, he didn't even bother looking at them.
Silence lingered for a moment. Remembering how he'd sounded on the phone, Mu Xiangxiang decided she should apologize first. She looked earnestly into his eyes. "...Um... I'm sorry. I really did promise I'd exercise and then failed to follow through. I've caused you trouble."
Qiao Nan met her gaze.
A moment later he scoffed and turned away. "Trouble my ass. It's only been a few days without working out. How much difference could it possibly make?"
Thinking scientifically, Mu Xiangxiang replied, "...Your stamina would definitely—"
"Hey!" Qiao Nan whipped back around, glaring at her. "What exactly do you think my stamina's like? Want me to throw you into the sky right now to prove it?"
"..." Mu Xiangxiang pursed her lips and turned her head away, unsure how to respond.
Qiao Nan cleared his throat. His eyes swept across the girl's slender neck, now tinged with pink. The standard Yingcheng girls' uniform shirt was white. The fabric was thin, hugging her figure closely. The slightly open collar revealed her collarbones...and a small patch of skin beneath them.
All of it...was pink now.
His gaze darkened. Clearing his throat again, he lowered his head, about to say something— When an elderly woman's voice suddenly rang out nearby. "Oh my! Young lady, out exercising so early in the morning?"
Both of them froze. They looked up simultaneously. Mu Xiangxiang stared blankly at the suddenly appeared group of elderly ladies. Qiao Nan: "..."
The woman leading them… ...was someone he'd met while exercising on the pull-up bars in Mu Xiangxiang's body. Every time he'd practiced on the bars, she'd stood nearby watching with obvious admiration.
The old lady looked at Mu Xiangxiang without sensing anything unusual. Turning excitedly to the sisters behind her, she proudly announced, "See? See? This is the girl I was telling you about! Amazing, isn't she? She can do more than ten pull-ups in one go every morning!"
As she spoke, she enthusiastically grabbed Mu Xiangxiang's arm and began dragging her toward the exercise equipment. "Come on! Show them! I kept telling them, but these old fossils wouldn't believe me. They kept saying no girl could possibly be that strong..."
Mu Xiangxiang: "..."
Dragged several steps forward, she looked utterly bewildered. "W-Wait..."
But once elderly ladies became enthusiastic… They were impossible to resist. Eventually she found herself escorted all the way to the pull-up bars. Under the sparkling, expectant gazes of a whole crowd of aunties, she stood there helplessly. Innocently, she turned to Qiao Nan.
Qiao Nan: "..."
Running away now obviously wasn't an option.
He coughed awkwardly. Feeling a little guilty for causing this trouble in the first place, he said, "Just do a few."
Mu Xiangxiang blinked. "...Do what?"
Qiao Nan: "Pull-ups."
She looked even more confused. She stared up at the high horizontal bar. "...Me?"
"..." Qiao Nan instructed, "Jump up. Grab the bar. Then bend your arms and pull yourself up with your arm strength. As long as your shoulders clear the bar, that's enough."
Still bewildered, Mu Xiangxiang looked up. "...But the bar's so high..."
...And how could I possibly lift myself up with just my arms?
The elderly ladies had already begun murmuring excitedly. Seeing that she had absolutely no sense for sports, Qiao Nan sighed. He gave up explaining. Instead, he crouched down… Wrapped his arms around her legs...and effortlessly lifted her into the air.
Even pressed together, the legs in his arms felt unbelievably slender. The warmth from Mu Xiangxiang's back carried a faint, pleasant fragrance against his face.
Startled, Mu Xiangxiang instinctively grabbed the bar overhead. Remembering Qiao Nan's instructions, she reflexively bent her elbows—
And easily pulled herself until both shoulders cleared the bar.
Mu Xiangxiang: "............"
...What?!
The elderly lady who'd brought her over became ecstatic. "See?! See?!"
"Woooooo~!" The surrounding seniors immediately burst into applause. "Incredible! Amazing! So impressive!"
This was only one of a handful of athletic experiences Mu Xiangxiang had ever had in her life. The girl who used to gasp for breath after an 800-meter run was completely dumbfounded. So... something that looked this difficult... was actually this easy?
Receiving so much attention and applause, the normally quiet and reserved girl became a little shy. Encouraged by all those eager eyes… She couldn't help doing a few more.
Beneath her skirt, her long, pale, perfectly straight legs stayed pressed together as her muscles tightened. Her toes pointed elegantly. Her skin was so smooth that there was barely a trace of body hair.
Qiao Nan's gaze landed on the hem of her skirt, occasionally lifted by the breeze. He pressed his tongue against his suddenly itchy gums, forcing himself to look away. Only then did he notice the growing crowd. It wasn't just elderly ladies anymore.
There were plenty of men watching as well. His brows furrowed. Raising his voice, he called out, "That's enough. Come down."
After six or seven pull-ups, Mu Xiangxiang was already getting tired. She immediately let go. As soon as she landed, another round of applause erupted. Feeling embarrassed, she looked excitedly at Qiao Nan. "...I'm a little tired... but it was much easier than I imagined!"
Qiao Nan snorted.
Seriously? Could you please have at least a little awareness of how ridiculous your physical abilities are? The only reason you got to show off in front of everyone is because this incredibly handsome guy standing in front of you gave you this body!
Yet… Meeting her slightly flushed cheeks, damp with sweat...and those bright, crystal-clear eyes… He suddenly found himself unable to say any of it. He could only scoff again and pretend to look away disdainfully.
Once he'd looked away, however, he had no idea what to do next. Glancing up at the pull-up bar—which was genuinely effortless for him—he bent his knees and leaped.
His hands caught the bar with ease. The elderly spectators immediately cheered again. "Ohhh! Another one's up! He's so tall and sturdy! He must be even stronger!"
Well, obviously, Qiao Nan thought. His eyes swept once more toward the girl looking up at him.
This girl's body still isn't good enough. She's sweating after only six or seven pull-ups.
With a mocking smile, he shook his head inwardly. Time for the school boss to show everyone what effortless mastery looks like.
Then he bent his arms. With perfect form… He confidently attempted to pull himself up—
He didn't move.
The Qiao Nan who had already burned through almost all of his strength running more than ten kilometers that morning: "................................"
Who am I? Where am I? Is it too late to pretend I never jumped up here?

Author's Note:
Mu Xiangxiang [shyly]: "Pull-ups are really easy. They're effortless."
Mu Xiangxiang [confused]: "Why is he just hanging there without moving?"
The onlookers [holding their breath in anticipation]: "Ooooooh! He's about to unleash his ultimate move!!
